A Technology Demonstration Project for Logistics Industry Funded by the SME Development Fund

[Hong Kong/18th November 2003] Hong Kong Sea Transport and Logistics Association (hereafter HKSTLA; website: http://www.hkstla.org), today announced that its application for "Develop a Technology Demonstration Project to Promote IT Usage among Logistics SMEs in Hong Kong" has been approved by the SME Development Fund from the Trade and Industry Department, HKSAR. A funding of HK$1,727,000 has been granted to carry the project for 18 months

Traditionally, the SMEs in the transportation and logistics industry are lagged behind or reluctant in adopting IT to increase their operational efficiency. In addition, many SMEs can not realize the importance of IT usage in creating their own core competency, especially in time of Hong Kong facing global competition as the major the logistic hub. Through the funding applied, we hope to achieve the followings:

  1. To demonstrate the practical benefits and return of investment of IT Usage to the SMEs
  2. To upgrade the skill level of IT usage among the local SMEs and through the sharing of resources, enable them to utilize some best of the breeds applications which in the past are only available to the large companies
  3. To help the logistics SMEs to improve their information system in order to cope with the pressure and requirement from other parties along the supply

"Our association is pleased to receive the funding support to develop this technology demonstration project and we are confident that many SMEs from the logistics industry will be directly benefited from this project," said Mr. Alfred Tsao, from HKSTLA Chairman.

Any opinions, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed in this material/event (or by members of the project team) do not reflect the views of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Trade and Industry Department or the Vetting Committee for the SME Development Fund.
