SME Development Project -
Technology Demonstration Project to Promote IT (Information Technology) Usage among Logistics SMEs in Hong Kong

Introduction

Hong Kong Sea Transport and Logistics Association (HKSTLA) had successfully applied the SME Development Fund from the Trade and Industry Department, HKSAR Government to launch a Technology Demonstration Project to promote the IT usage in the logistics industry.

The project plans to develop a web-based logistics platform as a demonstration project, which can serve as a showcase to encourage the local logistics SMEs to adopt IT Usage to do business with their external partners and to cope with the development of the Digital Trade and Transportation Network.

The project will be completed in 18 months, and will allow 20 companies to participate. A vetting committee will be formed with experts from various industry associations to ensure that an open and fair policy will be adopted in the selection process.

Project Focus

The project will focus on implementing a logistics software application to help logistics SMEs in 3 areas:

  1. To increase their internal operation efficiency by integrating their internal operation system to the web-based logistics platform. This will ensure a seamless flow of information and avoid the human errors and cost related with data input/re-entering. The integration will enable the effective flow of information between the freight forwarders and its trading partners like US Customs, Shippers, Carriers, Oversea Buyer, etc...

  2. To enhance the logistics companies' customer satisfaction by providing a web-based customer service and communication platform with the ease of use and 7 x 24 availability.

This web-based platform could also facilitate the sharing of data and logistics information with other parties along the supply chain, like US Customs, buyers, sellers etc...

  3. To extend the connectivity to different partners along the supply chain using automated electronic commerce tools and EDI automation to provide real time visibility of shipment status and information to both upstream and downstream partners.
